Patio & Artificial Grass Landscapers Chelmsford
This Chelmsford garden needed two things sorting at once: a proper patio area and a lawn that would stay looking decent without constant upkeep. We were brought in to handle both jobs together, which meant the patio and the artificial grass could be planned side by side rather than as separate afterthoughts.
The homeowner wanted somewhere solid to sit out and a garden that didn't turn to mud every winter. That's a fairly common brief for us in Chelmsford gardens, where soil conditions and drainage can make a natural lawn hard work to maintain.
Planning the layout
Before any digging started, we walked the garden with the client to work out where the patio should sit in relation to the house and the rest of the space. Getting this right matters more than people expect. A patio positioned badly can leave you with an awkward, leftover strip of garden that's neither one thing nor the other.
We marked out the patio area first, then planned the grass to run around it so the two elements would sit together properly rather than looking like two separate projects bolted on.

Laying the patio
Ground preparation is where most patios succeed or fail, so we spent proper time on excavation and making sure the base was firm and level before any laying began. Skimping on this stage is the usual reason patios crack, sink, or shift after a year or two.
Once the base was down, we laid the patio itself, checking levels and falls as we went so water would drain away from the house rather than pooling near the doors. It's a straightforward process on paper, but it needs care at every stage, particularly around edges and joints.
Fitting the artificial grass
With the patio finished, we moved on to the artificial grass. Ground preparation here is just as important as it is for paving, if not more so, because any unevenness underneath will show through the surface once it's laid.
We cleared the area, prepared a proper sub-base, and laid the grass so it met the patio edge cleanly with no visible gaps or loose joins. The client wanted a lawn that looked reasonable close up as well as from a distance, so we took extra care with the seams and the edging where the grass meets the paving and the borders.

Why patio and artificial grass work well together
Doing a patio installation and artificial grass in the same project has practical advantages. You avoid the mismatch you sometimes get when a lawn is added years after a patio, or vice versa, where levels don't quite line up or materials clash. Planning both together meant we could set consistent edges and drainage from the start.
It also means less maintenance for the homeowner going forward. No mowing, no reseeding bare patches, and a patio surface that's easy to keep clean. For a lot of Chelmsford households, particularly those with young families or dogs, that reduction in upkeep is the main reason they get in touch with us.
The finished garden
The result is a garden split sensibly between a hard-standing area for tables, chairs, or whatever the family needs, and a green space that will hold its colour and shape without the usual seasonal battle against weeds and mud. Both elements were finished to match each other, with clean lines where they meet.
We supply and fit both patios and artificial grass across Chelmsford and the wider area, and we're happy to take on projects that combine the two or deal with them separately, depending on what a garden actually needs. If you're weighing up your own options for a similar job, we're glad to come out, have a look, and talk through what would work for your space.
